The dirty secret of the hand towel
We all know that dirty hands can transmit germs and how important it is that we wash our hands before eating, preparing and handling food or after using the toilet. But washing doesn't solve the whole problem when it comes to getting hands clean. Because no matter how clean and bacteria free hands are after washing, drying them on an ordinary hand towel simply smears bacteria back on to them.
Kitchen and washroom hand towels are notorious for harboring and breeding bacteria, fuelled by their shared and frequent use, the presence of traces of decomposing food as well as the damp, temperature and humidity conditions that enable bacteria to multiply uncontrollably!
Tests show that bacteria on an ordinary hand towel can grow from 1 to 3 million in a kitchen or washroom in a matter of just 4 hours - to 1 billion after 1 days normal use - to 10 billion 3 days later and to 100 billion plus by the end of the week! Given that we wash hand towels once every week on average, its no wonder that hygienic hand drying is of such crucial importance in the promotion of good food safety, health and personal hygiene.
Keep your germs to yourself!
Andrew Kirk MSc AIEMA Consultant Environmental Microbioligist says "More than 18 million people in the UK risk transferring germs each day from bacteria laden hands to the face, foods, food preparation surfaces, cutlery and crockery, light switches, telephones, taps and other people as a result of not washing or drying their hands properly. More often than not, its the drying process that's at the root of the problem, where hand towels are prone to bacterial colonisation and so can transmit bacteria and cause cross contamination. Indeed many of the millions of cases every year of stomach bugs and food poisoning in the home - which can be serious especially for the elderly and children, can be attributed to the hygienic weakness of the ordinary hand towel."
"Hand drying matters! How you dry your hands contributes significantly to how clean your hands are and therefore the removal of the risk of cross infection. Whilst single use paper towels could be a solution - Given that over a period of 4 years an average family of 4 might use upto 70,000 towels!, the financial and environmental cost would be prohibitive. The new HYGI Hand Towels therefore are recommended as the best and most cost effective solution for all hand drying tasks in the kitchen and the cloakroom".
Silver helps to beat the bugs, neutralise towel odours and prolong freshness.
Ionic Silver Ag+ Anti Microbial is permanently locked inside the fibres of the HYGI hand towel - so its built in broad spectrum bioactivity not only inhibits the growth of bacteria that can cause food poisoning and intestinal infection, but is active against yeast, fungus, toxic mould, biofilming - slime and mildew as well as the bacteria that cause mustiness and odours.
With Ionic Silver no bacterial resistance or tolerance to Ag+ develops and in the minute amounts used is completely dermatologically safe.
Luxury Microfibre HYGI Hand Towels - Dry Hands SUPERFAST!
Derived from the worlds most advanced microfibre technology, HYGI HAND TOWELS incorporate micro fine star shaped fibres with ultra fine fibre wedges for enhanced SUPERABSORBENCY. 5 times more absorbent than cotton and with outstanding "wipe dry" characteristics, they actively draw moisture away and dry hands thoroughly in just seconds!
And its fibres less than 1/100th the fineness of a human hair - gives its sensational luxury and velvety feel.
Says Andrew Kirk MSc AIEMA Consultant Environmental Microbiologist "Drying hands thoroughly after washing and hence towel absorbency is important because not only do damp hands pass on bacteria 1000 times more readily than dry hands, but hands not properly dried can exacerbate skin problems and lead to dried, inflamed, itchy and flaky skin - especially in the winter".
